Thief saw Sailor sail as far afield as New York's Broadway, let's see where Angel can spirit Fallen Angel away to...
A new journey begins
Eleven years ago, I started a journey that would take me to New York’s Broadway and the world of theatre awards - a concept I’ve never placed any real importance on while understanding their marketing value.
It was all thanks to Thief, the story of an outlier called Sailor, inspired by the works of Jean Genet, and my desire to make uncomfortable theatre that might cause audiences to think. No message, just a challenge to long held attitudes; an invitation to reflect, perhaps.
That journey started with Thief’s World Premiere at the 2014 Brighton Fringe and continued in Edinburgh (many times), New York (twice), the Orkney Islands, London (twice), Glasgow and Leith.
Along the way, five actors played the story’s anti-hero, but it began with a young Fife actor at the start of his career, Matt Robertson. He was brilliant, originated the role and laid the foundations for what followed and continues to this day.
This August, I’m at the start of that journey all over again. Fallen Angel, my first solo play since Thief, received its World Premeire at this year’s Edinburgh Fringe. Again it’s the story of an outlier and has been 10 years in the making.
Again too, there’s a talented working class Scottish actor at the start of his career bringing its protagonist, Angel, to life. Step forward Líam Campbell.
As we prepare to go into rehearsals and into the supernatural world of Angel (the piece was inspired by the 500-year-old tale, The Faerie Boy of Leith) I wonder what may lie ahead. I never knew where Theif would take, nFallen Angelbut what became the on and off stage Thief family
Some of them are back for Fallen Angel. Take a bow Edward Cory, Erik Grieve and Sabina Smith. As always there are no promises but it’s exciting… and that’s why I do it, why I love being a part the unpredictable world of theatre.
If you you fancy joining us on the journey, all you can support us by poping along one night. It would be great to see you. Say hello.
